That=E2=80=99s what I heard yelled over and over again last = week when I went with my in-laws to Seahurst Park in Burien. I love going t= o low tide days at different beaches around Puget Sound and last week were = some of the lowest tides of the year. The park was packed with people. Ther= e were also school buses parked and elementary school kids scatted in clump= s along the wide and long beach. The Seattle Aquarium had staff and volunte= ers present to help kids and adults learn about what we were seeing. As we = got close to the water=E2=80=99s edge, we kept hearing little voices yellin= g out OBSERVATION! We learned that the kids were told when they saw somethi= ng interesting, they were to stop and yell OBSERVATION so that others could= come and see. Soon kids and adults would come over and form a small groupi= ng crouched down to look at what low tide revealed to them. Seattle Aquariu= m staff would then talk about what was found. As we walked along, we saw so= me children yelling over and over and over again and some children needing = encouragement to share what they had found =E2=80=93 even to the point of a= n adult saying Observation in a lower voice while the child hesitantly back= ed away. It was fun and contagious. Soon my in-laws and I were shouting OBS= ERVATION when we saw moon snail shells, starfish, large crabs, beautiful ke= lp, and more. It=E2=80=99s a great image, isn=E2=80=99t it? It evokes curio= sity, wonder, expectation, and witness. I wonder how this connects to us, t= he Body of Christ in the world as we near the end of the Easter season (yes= , it is still Eastertide) and approach Pentecost. How likely are we to look= around to look for signs of God=E2=80=99s goodness, grace, forgiveness, tr= ansformation, love, joy, hope, and more? And when we see it, how often do w= e want to share what we have seen? How likely are we to shout OBSERVATION? = And if we do, are we like the child who shouts it at full capacity until a = large crowd surrounds us, or are we like the child who just needs a little = encouragement to share the wonders of God=E2=80=99s love that we have seen?= And are we curious enough about what God is up to, to keep our ears and he= arts open to the shouts of OBSERVATION around us? Mill Plain United Methodist Church in Vancouver, WA, h= as about a dozen middle and senior high school youth. Like most churches, t= hey want to keep them active and engaged, and most importantly, to nurture = their faith in Jesus Christ. The Church was blessed to have two youth direc= tors who worked with them for ten years (an unusually long tenure for youth= leaders). When they discerned it was time to leave after the pandemic. To = their joy, they were able to hire a well-qualified candidate who worked wit= h them for nine months, but then left their employment. Starting in Septemb= er 2024, they advertised on Indeed, through our church email contacts, cont= acts with area colleges, and anywhere else they could think of. They had se= veral applicants, but many did not respond when they contacted them for int= erviews, and others did not work out for various reasons. Meanwhile, the yo= uth continued to miss the youth group. Parents volunteered to lead a few ac= tivities. Pastor Sue Ostrom took on more leadership, though at a reduced sc= hedule for the youth. Adult volunteers took on teaching youth Sunday School= and serving as the second adult whenever the youth met. Still, the program= was not what they wanted for their youth. This spring, Don Carlson, who gr= ew up in the now-closed Raymond UMC and had attended Twinlow Camp as a yout= h, moved to Vancouver. When he googled =E2=80=9Cchurches near me,=E2=80=9D = he found the Mill Plain UMC website. On the first Sunday he came to worship= , one of the greeters took him by the arm and walked him around to meet Sue= and the others. Mill Plain felt warm and welcoming to him, like he remembe= red the Raymond UMC of his youth. Don came back. He expressed interest in h= elping with youth activities to one of the Sunday School Teachers. Their Ch= urch Council chair asked if he would be interested in becoming the youth di= rector. With a history of coaching in children=E2=80=99s sports, Don said h= e was =E2=80=9Cvery interested.=E2=80=9D Mill Plain hired Don in early Apri= l, and the youth group meets weekly. Eight youth, including some who had st= opped attending worship or had never come to youth group, plan to participa= te in the SLAM Service and Learning Trip to Wapato, WA, sponsored by the PN= W Annual Conference this July. font-size: 15px;"> </span></p> <p style=3D"text-align: justify; margin: 0;" align=3D"justify"><span style= =3D"font-size: 15px;">That’s what I heard yelled over and over again= last week when I went with my in-laws to Seahurst Park in Burien. I love g= oing to low tide days at different beaches around Puget Sound and last week= were some of the lowest tides of the year. The park was packed with people= . There were also school buses parked and elementary school kids scatted in= clumps along the wide and long beach. The Seattle Aquarium had staff and v= olunteers present to help kids and adults learn about what we were seeing. = As we got close to the water’s edge, we kept hearing little voices y= elling out OBSERVATION! We learned that the kids were told when they saw so= mething interesting, they were to stop and yell OBSERVATION so that others = could come and see. Soon kids and adults would come over and form a small g= rouping crouched down to look at what low tide revealed to them. Seattle Aq= uarium staff would then talk about what was found. As we walked along, we s= aw some children yelling over and over and over again and some children nee= ding encouragement to share what they had found – even to the point = of an adult saying Observation in a lower voice while the child hesitantly = backed away.</span></p> <p style=3D"text-align: justify; margin: 0;" align=3D"justify"><br></p> <p style=3D"text-align: justify; margin: 0;" align=3D"justify"><span style= =3D"font-size: 15px;">It was fun and contagious. Soon my in-laws and I were= shouting OBSERVATION when we saw moon snail shells, starfish, large crabs,= beautiful kelp, and more.</span></p> <p style=3D"text-align: justify; margin: 0;" align=3D"justify"><br></p> <p style=3D"text-align: justify; margin: 0;" align=3D"justify"><span style= =3D"font-size: 15px;">It’s a great image, isn’t it? It evokes= curiosity, wonder, expectation, and witness.</span></p> <p style=3D"text-align: justify; margin: 0;" align=3D"justify"><br></p> <p style=3D"text-align: justify; margin: 0;" align=3D"justify"><span style= =3D"font-size: 15px;">I wonder how this connects to us, the Body of Christ = in the world as we near the end of the Easter season (yes, it is still East= ertide) and approach Pentecost. How likely are we to look around to look fo= r signs of God’s goodness, grace, forgiveness, transformation, love,= joy, hope, and more? And when we see it, how often do we want to share wha= t we have seen? How likely are we to shout OBSERVATION? And if we do, are w= e like the child who shouts it at full capacity until a large crowd surroun= ds us, or are we like the child who just needs a little encouragement to sh= are the wonders of God’s love that we have seen? When they di= scerned it was time to leave after the pandemic. To their joy, they we= re able to hire a well-qualified candidate who worked with them for nine mo= nths, but then left their employment.</p> <p style=3D"text-align: justify; margin: 0;" align=3D"justify"><br></p> <p style=3D"text-align: justify; margin: 0;" align=3D"justify">Starting in = September 2024, they advertised on Indeed, through our church email contact= s, contacts with area colleges, and anywhere else they could think of. They= had several applicants, but many did not respond when they contacted them = for interviews, and others did not work out for various reasons. Meanw= hile, the youth continued to miss the youth group.</p> <p style=3D"text-align: justify; margin: 0;" align=3D"justify"><br></p> <p style=3D"text-align: justify; margin: 0;" align=3D"justify">Parents volu= nteered to lead a few activities. Pastor Sue Ostrom took on more leade= rship, though at a reduced schedule for the youth. Adult volunteers to= ok on teaching youth Sunday School and serving as the second adult whenever= the youth met. Still, the program was not what they wanted for their = youth.</p> <p style=3D"margin: 0;"><br></p> <p style=3D"text-align: justify; margin: 0;" align=3D"justify">This spring,= Don Carlson, who grew up in the now-closed Raymond UMC and had attended Tw= inlow Camp as a youth, moved to Vancouver. When he googled “chu= rches near me,” he found the Mill Plain UMC website. On the fir= st Sunday he came to worship, one of the greeters took him by the arm and w= alked him around to meet Sue and the others. Mill Plain felt warm and = welcoming to him, like he remembered the <span style=3D'font-family: "Times= New Roman", Times, serif;'>Raymond UMC of his youth. Don came back.&#= xa0;He expressed interest in helping with youth activities to one of the Su= nday School Teachers. Their Church Council chair asked if he would be = interested in becoming the youth director. With a history of coaching = in children’s sports, Don said he was “very interested.ȁ= d;</span></p> <p style=3D"margin: 0;"><br></p> <p style=3D"text-align: justify; margin: 0;" align=3D"justify"><span style= =3D'font-family: "Times New Roman", Times, serif;'>Mill Plain hired Don in = early April, and the youth group meets weekly.
